To find a phone lost overseas, sign in to iCloud.com/find or android.com/find from any browser and check the map. A phone left behind in a hotel or cafe abroad often reconnects the moment it finds known Wi-Fi, so the map can update even with cellular roaming switched off.

Why a phone abroad can still be found
Most travelers turn cellular roaming off to avoid charges, which means the phone is not on a mobile network. It can still get online two ways. First, if it connects to Wi-Fi, a cafe network, an airport, the hotel, it sends a fresh location to your account. Second, an iPhone 11 or newer broadcasts encrypted Bluetooth to nearby strangers’ iPhones through the Find My offline network, so any passing iPhone relays its position back to you even with no SIM and no Wi-Fi.
You cannot locate the phone from its phone number alone. Tracking runs off the Apple or Google account signed in on the device, not the SIM, which is why a foreign SIM or no SIM at all does not hide it.
Steps to find a phone left behind overseas
- Open the web finder: go to iCloud.com/find (iPhone) or android.com/find (Android) and sign in with the phone’s account.
- Mark it Lost: enable Lost Mode. It locks the phone, shows a message with a contact number on the screen, and keeps location reporting on.
- Wait for a Wi-Fi ping: if the map shows only a last known spot, leave Lost Mode on. When the phone joins any Wi-Fi, the position refreshes and you get an email alert.
- Contact the venue: with a recent map point, call the hotel or restaurant directly and ask them to hold the phone at the front desk.
