How Plus Codes turn coordinates into words you can say
A Plus Code is latitude and longitude rewritten in base 20. The globe is divided into a grid, each cell gets letters and digits from a 20-character alphabet without vowels or confusing pairs, and nearby places get similar codes. The plus sign after the eighth character is only a visual separator.
Because the system is a fixed grid, encoding needs no database and works offline. Our guide to location sharing without a street address explains when a code beats coordinates: rural deliveries, meeting spots in parks, and any place whose official address does not exist or is wrong.
