Static code or dynamic service

This generator makes static codes. The website, password, coordinate, or contact lives directly inside the pattern. There is no short link, no hosted page, no account record, no scan counter, and no redirect to maintain. The code works as long as the encoded detail itself works.

A dynamic service stores a redirect on its servers, so the destination can be edited and scans can be counted. That convenience has a price: the code dies when the subscription lapses, and every scan is reported to the provider. For a cafe Wi-Fi card, a business card, or a printed flyer, the static code is the honest choice: what you print is what keeps working.

The tradeoff runs one way. A static code cannot be edited after printing, and it cannot tell you how many people scanned it. If you need either, you need a dynamic service with everything that implies. For everything else, static is simpler, private, and free forever.

Which content type should you pick

Match the type to what the scanner should do. A website code opens a page, a Wi-Fi code offers to join a network, a geo code drops a map pin, and a contact code offers to save a person. Storing a bare URL as plain text also scans, but the phone then shows text instead of offering to open it.

Website and text

Website codes store the full URL including https://, with no shortener in between. Scanners show the domain before opening, which is exactly the safety property you want to preserve: never hide the destination behind a redirect you do not control. Plain text is for anything without an action: a serial number, a short notice, a translation, a quote.

Map location

The location type stores coordinates as a geo pin that map apps open directly, or as a Maps link that works in any browser. It is the right choice for a fixed place: a trailhead, a rental entrance, a market stall. For a position that moves with you, a frozen coordinate is the wrong mechanism. Wi-Fi for guests

A Wi-Fi code joins a network without spelling the password aloud. Enter the network name exactly, pick the security type, and mark hidden networks so the phone knows to look for them. Contact card

The contact type writes a minimal vCard with only the fields you complete. Phone cameras offer to save it directly, which is why it belongs on business cards and badges. Keep it short: each field adds modules, and a dense symbol demands a larger print. Details beyond a name, one phone, and one email usually belong on a contact page behind a website code instead. Email, phone, SMS

These three prepare an action with fields prefilled: an email with recipient, subject, and body; a call with an optional extension pause; a text with the number and message ready. They save typing on small screens, for example on packaging, receipts, and support cards.

SVG for print, PNG for screens

Every code downloads in both formats, free and without a watermark. Pick SVG for anything that goes to print or into a design file: it scales from a business card to a poster with no blurring, and it opens cleanly in Illustrator, Figma, and Inkscape. Pick PNG for a document, a slide, a message, or a web page, where a fixed-size raster is simpler to place.

For print, keep the symbol at least 2 cm on each side for hand-held cards, and roughly a tenth of the reading distance for posters. Leave the quiet zone, the blank margin around the symbol, untouched, keep dark modules on a light background, and re-check the layout after any edit or compression. What stays inside the browser

Your content is processed in this browser tab. It is not sent to LocateKit for generation, tracking, or storage. The encoding and decoding libraries load with the page and run locally, and the payload you enter, including any Wi-Fi password, never leaves the device.

The generated code itself is not encrypted or access controlled. Anyone who can see or photograph it may recover its contents, so treat a printed Wi-Fi code or contact card as visible information. Before scanning someone else's code, read whether QR codes are safe to scan.

QR code questions

Is this QR code static or dynamic?
Static. The encoded website, text, location, or contact is stored directly in the black and white pattern. Nobody can change it later, it never expires on our side, and scanning it does not phone home. A dynamic code from a marketing service can be edited and tracked, but it stops working when you stop paying.
Is anything uploaded or tracked?
No. The code is generated by your browser on this device, and downloads unlock only after the files decode back to the reviewed content. LocateKit does not receive the payload, and there is no redirect or analytics identifier inside the code.
What does the location QR code contain?
Either a geo pin with latitude and longitude, which map apps open directly, or a Google Maps search link with the same coordinates. Both point at the exact numbers you enter. To share where you are right now with a radius you control, use the radius map tool instead of a frozen coordinate.
Which size should I download for print?
PNG at 512 pixels is enough for screens and small prints. Use 1024 or 2048 pixels for flyers, business cards with small codes, or large posters. SVG scales without limits, so it is the best choice for professional print layouts.
Why did generation fail for long content?
A QR code has a fixed capacity that shrinks as error correction rises. Shorten the content, split it across two codes, or pick a lower error correction level. A contact card with every field filled is a common case that needs trimming.
Can a Wi-Fi QR code store my password safely?
Anyone who scans the code can read the password, so only share it with people who should join the network. For guests, consider a separate guest network and rotate its password after the visit.
How do I make a contact QR code for a business card?
Pick the contact type and fill in at least a display name. Only completed fields go into the vCard, so keep it short: every extra character adds modules and needs a larger print. For long details, encode a link to a contact page instead.
Are QR codes safe to scan?
The pattern itself is neutral, but the content can be anything, including a malicious link. Check the preview URL your camera shows before opening it, and never scan a code that promises access in exchange for login details.
Do static QR codes expire?
No. The payload lives inside the pattern, so there is no service behind it that could lapse. A linked page can move and a password can change, and then you print a new code.
What does error correction do?
It adds redundant data that helps readers recover from smudges, glare, or minor damage. Higher levels survive more abuse but store less content. It never licenses covering modules with a logo.
Can I edit a static QR code after printing it?
No. The content is part of the printed symbol. Change the fields, create a new code, verify it, and replace the old print.
