How the IMEI works

How GPS tracking works

The phone’s GNSS receiver listens to GPS (and usually GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou) satellites, computes the distance to each from signal travel time, and triangulates its own position. “Enter the IMEI on this site and see the phone’s location on a map.” The founding myth of the category, and the most expensive one. These sites cannot deliver, because no data path exists from a public IMEI query to a position. What they deliver instead: registration funnels that harvest your email and case details, premium unlock payments, malware, and phishing pages. If any service actually had carrier-grade location access, selling it over a web form would be illegal.
“The IMEI has a built-in GPS tracker.” The IMEI is a number in memory: no radio, no receiver, no power. The GPS chip is a separate component, and nothing about the IMEI controls or reads it. Conflating the two is like thinking a VIN can tell you where a car is parked.
