An AirTag is for an iPhone or iPad owner. A Pixel Tag is for an Android owner. Neither tracker is a practical workaround for the other ecosystem. Apple locks normal AirTag setup to its own devices, while Pixel Tag is designed for Android 9 and later through Google Find Hub.

Pixel Tag was announced on August 12, 2026 and is scheduled to go on sale on November 11. That makes this a specification comparison rather than a retail test. Google’s published details are promising, but real network behavior, accessory availability, and battery experience need to be checked once the tag is in people’s bags and keyrings.

Do not choose based on the network marketing alone. An AirTag in a household with no iPhone is useless as an owned tracker, however large Find My may be. The same goes for a Pixel Tag in an iPhone-only home. Compatibility is the first spec, not a footnote.

Price, battery, and physical design

Google matches Apple’s US pricing: $29 for one tag and $99 for a four-pack. Both use a user-replaceable CR2032 coin battery and make no subscription part of basic finding. Apple rates the current AirTag for more than a year; Google also says Pixel Tag lasts over a year.

The devices take different shapes. AirTag is a round disc, 31.9 mm across and 8 mm thick. It still needs a holder or case to attach to keys. Pixel Tag is a thin rounded rectangle, 46.1 by 28 by 5.4 mm, and weighs 11.8 grams with a battery. It also has no integrated keyring hole, so a keyring holder will still be part of its real cost.

Pixel Tag’s thinner body is better suited to a bag pocket or a wallet that has some spare room. AirTag is smaller in footprint, but thicker. Neither replaces a proper card-shaped tracker for a truly slim wallet.

Finder networks: the useful difference is your phone

AirTag broadcasts Bluetooth identifiers that nearby Apple devices can relay through Find My. Pixel Tag does the Android equivalent through Find Hub, Google’s encrypted crowdsourced network. Both systems are designed to let an owner see a lost item’s last reported location without revealing the identities of people whose phones helped relay it.

Network size is not a guarantee of an immediate dot on a map. A tag still needs a participating device to pass within Bluetooth range. An airport, station, hotel, or city street gives either system more chances to update than a quiet trail or a parked car in an empty area. Neither tag has a cellular connection, so neither can create an update where no nearby phones exist.

Apple describes Find My as a global network of more than a billion Apple devices. Google says Find Hub can use a global network of more than a billion Android devices. For an everyday owner, the device in their pocket matters more than trying to crown one network universally better. It is the account and phone compatibility that decide whether you can set the tracker up, ring it, share it, and read its map.

Precision finding near the object

Both tags can do more than display a last-known place. When the phone and tracker are close, Ultra Wideband can provide distance and directional guidance. AirTag calls this Precision Finding. Pixel Tag supports UWB Precision Finding and Bluetooth Channel Sounding.

The qualifier is important: the phone needs compatible radio hardware too. Owning a new tag does not automatically give every iPhone or Android phone an arrow that leads to the keys. Google documents UWB support for newer Pixel Pro phones, selected Samsung Galaxy Plus and Ultra phones, and certain Motorola models. On an Android phone without UWB, Pixel Tag can still be paired, shown in Find Hub, and asked to play a sound. It just loses the most precise close-range guidance.

Apple’s current AirTag has a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. Apple says it expands the range for Precision Finding by up to 50 percent compared with the earlier model. Pixel Tag’s UWB and Channel Sounding capabilities are announced specifications. They look competitive, but head-to-head range claims should wait for retail testing in the same buildings and conditions.

Pixel Tag’s extra button and sharing

Pixel Tag has a physical button that can ring a connected phone, including when the phone is on silent. That reverses the usual finder relationship: the tag can help locate the phone. Google also says Pixel Tag supports sharing with up to ten people, which could be useful for a household suitcase or a shared set of keys.

AirTag has no physical button and no equivalent reverse-phone-finding shortcut. Its strength is a mature, simple experience in Find My and support for Apple’s item-location sharing features. If your practical problem is “I lose my phone as often as my keys,” Pixel Tag’s button is a meaningful advantage. It is not a reason to switch ecosystems on its own.

Travel, accessories, and the first-year unknowns

Both trackers are reasonable for keys, bags, and checked luggage because their batteries are user-replaceable and they do not require a paid cellular plan. The limitations are also shared: the tag may go quiet while a plane is in the air, a remote location may have no nearby participating phone, and a location pin cannot make an airline deliver a bag. Use the information as evidence, then work through the carrier’s delayed-bag process.

Accessories deserve more attention than they get in a comparison table. AirTag has a long established market for keyrings, luggage holders, and card adapters, because it has been on sale since 2021. Pixel Tag’s shape is thinner but different, and its accessory ecosystem will only develop after the November retail launch. If you need a specific holder before a trip, availability can be more important than a minor difference in radio specifications.

Pixel Tag’s battery estimate and close-range behavior are also pre-release claims at the time of writing. Google says it will last over a year, but a year-long item finder needs time in actual bags, cars, and pockets before any publication can call that result independently verified. That is why an iPhone owner who needs a tracker now should not delay a purchase for Pixel Tag, and why an Android owner should treat its release as a reason to wait, not as a product already reviewed.

Privacy and unwanted-tracker alerts

Neither device should be treated as a covert people tracker. Apple and Google take part in the industry standard for unwanted-tracker alerts. An iPhone or Android device can warn a person when an unknown compatible tracker seems to be moving with them. That person can view the detection path, make the tracker play a sound in range, and follow the manufacturer instructions to disable it.

These alerts help protect people from misuse, but they do not detect a GPS device with its own cellular SIM.
