Apple AirTag and Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 solve the same small problem: finding an object that should not have disappeared. Both can make a sound nearby, show a last reported location farther away, use a replaceable CR2032 battery, and resist dust and short contact with water. They are not interchangeable, because each one belongs to a different phone ecosystem.
Use an AirTag with an iPhone or iPad. Use a SmartTag2 with a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet. That is the decision that matters most. A SmartTag2 is not a general Android tracker, and an AirTag is not an Android tracker at all.

Trying to stretch either product past this boundary leads to frustration. SmartTag2 needs a Galaxy device with Android 9 or later for normal compatibility. AirTag needs an iPhone or iPad. You can detect an unknown tracker across platforms as a safety measure, but detection is not ownership or item management.
How the two finding networks work
Neither device has GPS or a SIM card. Both send Bluetooth signals and rely on nearby phones to help relay a location.
AirTag uses Apple’s Find My network. When a nearby participating Apple device detects the tag, it can pass encrypted location information to the owner. SmartTag2 uses SmartThings Find and the Galaxy Find Network, which works through nearby Samsung Galaxy devices. In both cases, the owner sees a location in their own app, while the relaying phone does not need to know whose item it helped locate.
For a lost set of keys at home, the network difference matters less than the built-in sound and close-range guidance. For a suitcase at an airport, a bag left in a city, or an item that travels internationally, the density of compatible phones around the object becomes important. Treat either map pin as a last reported sighting, not a live GPS feed. A quiet rural road or an empty building may not produce an update for either tag.
The practical rule is to choose the network your phone can use. A Galaxy owner gains no advantage from Apple’s network if they cannot set up and monitor the AirTag in the first place.
Precision finding and UWB
Both products can guide you during the final part of a search, but only when the phone supports Ultra Wideband. AirTag uses Apple’s Precision Finding interface with direction, distance, visual feedback, and haptics. The 2026 AirTag has a second-generation UWB chip; Apple says it can extend Precision Finding range by up to 50 percent over the earlier version.
SmartTag2 supports Compass View and Search Nearby. Samsung says its UWB features need a UWB-enabled Galaxy smartphone and Android 11 or later. If your Galaxy model lacks UWB, the tag still works for standard Bluetooth finding and ringing. You simply do not get the most precise direction overlay.
This is a useful reason to check the exact phone model before buying. The box can say UWB, but close-range arrows require the radio in both the tracker and your phone. Do not assume every Galaxy model includes it.
Design makes SmartTag2 easier on keys
The products have very different physical approaches. AirTag is a compact round disc with a polished steel back. It is easy to slip inside a bag, but it has no keyring hole. To put it on keys, you buy a holder.
SmartTag2 has a pill-shaped body with a large integrated loop. That makes it more convenient for keys straight out of the box. It is larger and thicker than an AirTag, at 28.8 by 52.44 by 8 mm and 13.75 grams, but the loop is not decoration. It removes an accessory purchase and makes the tag easier to clip to luggage or a bag zipper.
SmartTag2 also has one physical button. It can ring a connected phone, and Samsung lets compatible SmartThings setups use it for home automation routines. AirTag has no button and no SmartThings-style remote function. If you already run lights or other devices through SmartThings, this is a real Galaxy-specific benefit, not a generic tracker feature.
Battery, water resistance, and cost
AirTag and SmartTag2 use the same readily available CR2032 coin battery, with no recurring subscription for basic finding. AirTag is rated for more than one year. Samsung rates SmartTag2 for up to 500 days in normal mode, or up to 700 days in Power Saving Mode. Those are manufacturer ratings, not a promise that every tag will reach the number.
Both have IP67 dust and water resistance. In everyday terms, rain, a wet bag, or a brief accidental drop in water should not end their life. It does not make either tag a diving device, and a cracked housing can compromise the seal.

Privacy and the limits of object trackers
Neither tag is meant for tracking a person, a pet that may roam far away, or a vehicle that needs continuous location. They have no cellular connection. Their map locations depend on another compatible phone being nearby, and the position may be hours old in an area with few participating devices.
They also include anti-stalking protections. Modern iPhone and Android devices can surface alerts when an unknown compatible tracker appears to move with someone. Which tracker is right for luggage?
For an iPhone owner, AirTag is the natural luggage choice because it belongs in Find My and can be shared through Apple’s item-location tools where supported. For a Galaxy owner, SmartTag2 has the same core object-finding idea and the useful built-in loop. Neither tag can force an airline to retrieve a delayed bag or create location updates during a flight.
